Networking in Academia. Building professional communities for a successful career  (Spring School for Young Researchers Universität Duisburg-Essen, 21.4.2015)

It is evident that networks play an increasingly prominent role in different areas of society. The academic world makes here no exception: cooperation and networking in this setting are often seen as sources of innovation. There is also an increasing demand for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research projects from most research funding institutions. Collaborative reasearch, if in excellence clusters or in trandisciplinary settings, is in most research projects a prerequisite for funding applications.

Besides funding reasons, networking plays a paramount role for the individual career development. Being an integrated, active part of the academic community often positively influences the chances of getting a professorship.

Researchers in particular were always globally networked – that’s what the concept of „invisible college“ stands for. Alexander von Humboldt for example has written up to 50.000 letters in his life an received in his latest years up to 2.000 mail pieces per year.

Nowadays, the picture is no different. Today, academia as a social system is strongly shaped by the acknowledgement by peers. Reputation is gained through performance and competency recognition by the peer group, as the Matthew effect shows.

Based on the insights of network research, the participants will learn to discover and tap into various networking opportunities and to succesfully avoid common networking pitfalls (competitive behaviour). Most importantly, the participants will assess their personal social capital during the workshop and will learn strategies to increase its impact.
